luther on vocationMartin Luther has an intriguing diagnosis of why we crave worldly recognition from our work.

He believed “our work goes on in a world where the devil effects his devastation,” according to Gustaf Wingren in Luther on Vocation.  In this way, “Christian love is poured out and lost in the world.”  When faced with this fact, a Christian is “tempted to do something other than his vocation, something that has more meaning and receives some measure of recognition from the world.”
